# Letters of Recommendation for Dr. Ivor Murray

From ROBERT OMOND, Esq., M.D., President of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, &c. &c.

From TOM MATTHEW, Esq., Staff Surgeon-Major to H.M's Forces; Principal Medical Officer of the Castle Hospital, Balaclava, during the late War, &c., &c.

THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS,

EDINBURGH, 20th November, 1858.

DR. IVOR MURRAY, who is a Fellow of this College, is well known to me as an intelligent, energetic, and highly accomplished Medical Man, and he is in every respect pre-eminently qualified for the Colonial situation which he now solicits.

ROBERT OMOND, M.D.,

President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh,

From JAMES MILLER, ESQ., F.R.C.S.E., F.R.S.E., Professor of Surgery in the University of Edinburgh, Surgeon in Ordinary to the Queen and H.R.H. the Prince Consort, for Scotland, &c. &c.

29, CHARLOTTE SQUARE, EDINBURGH,

November 20th, 1858.

I have much pleasure in stating that DR. IVOR MURRAY is known to me as a thoroughly educated Physician, now of large experience in the diseases of warm countries; and that I consider him very fully qualified in all respects for the situation of Colonial Surgeon at Hong Kong.

JAMES MILLER,

MY DEAR MURRAY,

LONDON, 20th November, 1858.

I have much pleasure in recording the very high estimate I have formed of your talents, integrity, and professional acquirements.

Our acquaintance, which commenced in 1855 when you were serving with the British army before Sebastopol, has existed under circumstances which have afforded me very unusual opportunities of becoming thoroughly acquainted with your excellent natural abilities, and your large acquired information both on professional and general topics, as well as with your robust constitution, your correct habits, and your physical capability of withstanding the effects of hard work both mental and bodily, no less than with the kindliness of your bearing to all, your patience under difficulties, and your skill to adapt yourself to trying circumstances, so as to obtain for your patients the fullest amount of benefit attainable.

The fact of your former long residence in China and your thorough practical acquaintance with the diseases of the country can scarcely fail in being recognised as of high value in a candidate for the office of Colonial Surgeon at Hong Kong, and I can only further express my own very high opinion of the soundness of your professional judgment, and of your skill in the practice of both the surgical and the medical departments of our art.

With my best wishes for your success, believe me,

Faithfully,

T. P. MATTHEW,

Staff Surgeon-Major to Her Majesty's Forces.

From JOHN B. COWAN, Esq., M.D., Professor of Medical Jurisprudence, Andersonian University, Glasgow, &c., &c.

GLASGOW, 20th November, 1858.

I have great pleasure in bearing my testimony to the eminent fitness of Dr. IVOR MURRAY for the vacant office of Colonial Surgeon at Hong Kong. He earned for himself a high reputation as a Student at Edinburgh. Subsequently, having proceeded to China, he had the best opportunities for qualifying himself for the office to which he now aspires, and I have reason to believe
